History of the Sushi Awards
About the Eat-Japan Sushi Awards
The Eat-Japan Sushi Awards aims to promote the excellence of Japanese cuisine and food and drink products to people in the UK and beyond. Since 2005 it has come to be recognised as the world’s leading sushi event. The Eat-Japan Sushi Awards has been held since 2002, when the very first Original Sushi Competition was held in London. Since then, it has grown and developed to reflect the interests of the growing audience for sushi in the UK, and now incorporates a number of events.
What’s unique about the Sushi Awards is that they are determined by the people who know the best – everyone who has eaten the entry sushi. Each year, the audience at the World Sushi Awards or the UK Sushi Roll Championship gets to taste each entry sushi and then vote for their favourite. We also have a celebrity judging panel, featuring top names in food including Henry Harris of Racine, Jun Tanaka of Pearl, and Mat Follas of The Wild Garlic and MasterChef winner 2009, who also get to have their say. The sushi chef with the most number of votes is crowned the winner, so there’s no way of winning without winning over the audience, too!

Eat-Japan Sushi Awards events:
World Sushi Awards: seven professional chefs from around the world, the Seven Sushi Samurai, gather in one room to create 300+ pieces of original sushi for guests and judges. Once all the sushi has been tasted, everyone casts their vote and the winner crowned World Sushi of the Year. This is the only international competition to bring the world’s top sushi chefs together under one roof.

UK Sushi Roll Championship: created especially for HYPER JAPAN, this accessible version of the Sushi Awards sees five chefs from UK sushi restaurants each create a unique sushi roll. Again, everyone who tastes the sushi gets to vote, and the winner is crowned Sushi Roll of the Year.

Original Sushi Competition: the general public is invited to send in ideas for an original sushi, the only restriction being the use of vinegared sushi rice. After running from 2002 to 2007, the Original Sushi Competition has been on hiatus, but it’s now back with a bang for 2012.
